Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train are the big new releases this weekend. Mortal Kombat, based on the video game, comes to theaters and HBO Max. An action fest that will also appeal to fans of the 1995 original. That original brought in $124.7 million in box office.
Weekend Update: Mortal Kombat made $9.03 million on Friday. Meanwhile, Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train brought it $9.5 million Thursday night and Friday combined.
Interest in Mortal Kombat is peaking right now, based on Google Trend search data. Idaho, Nevada, Arkansas and Maryland are the top states searching for information on the movie.
Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train is an R rated animated film. AMC Theatres says Demon Slayer has “taken the world by storm.” It’s based on the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge. It is the highest grossing Japanese film of all time. AMC is encouraging fans to dress up in their best cosplay and wear their Demon Slayer merch.
Both new films are selling out Friday showings. The AMC Wheaton Mall 9, outside Washington DC, already has 5 of the 6 showings of Demon Slayer sold out. The prime evening showings of Mortal Kombat are sold out. However, some afternoon showings have tickets available.
The strength of Demon Slayer can’t be underestimated. It has a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and 100% on the Tomatometer. The movie is a top trending Google search today. Based on Google Trend data, top states interested are Nevada, California, Texas and Arizona.
Both films will topple Godzilla vs. Kong, which made $7.7 million domestically last weekend.
