The last chapter of the Fast Saga, F9, should take the crown for the biggest opening frame of the year so far. Here are several ‘Fast’ reasons why:
- Movie theaters around the country are slowing going back to 100% capacity. More seats will be available in the auditoriums with no social distancing required.
- The Fate of the Furious, the previous installment in the series, did $1.236 billion at the box office. Furthermore, that 2017 film collected a $98.8 million opening weekend.
- F9 is the second most awaited Summer 2021 film, according to Fandango’s survey. Only Disney’s Black Widow is more anticipated.
- Universal’s F9 has the widest release (4,179 theaters) of any movie released during the pandemic. Thursday evening domestic box office last night grossed $7.1 million.
A Quiet Place Part II took the checkered flag with a big Memorial Day weekend. The Paramount film brought in $57 million across 3,726 locations, according to Comscore. F9 should exceed that and test $70 million. Other top performing pandemic films were sequels as well, including Godzilla vs. Kong.
Interest in ‘Fast and Furious 9’ searches are strongest as a percent of total Google queries in Texas, California, Illinois, Georgia and Florida.

F9 – The Story
Here is what F9 is about-
F9 is the ninth chapter in the saga that has endured for almost two decades and has earned more than $5 billion around the world. Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena). F9 sees the return of Justin Lin as director, who helmed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters of the series when it transformed into a global blockbuster.
John Cena will next be seen in this Summer’s The Suicide Squad.
What’s Next
July 9’s Black Widow will be just as important as F9, though that will have a streaming option via Disney+ Premier Access. In fact, the Scarlett Johansson spy thriller is the #1 movie Fandango ticket buyers are most excited about.
