Katy Chevigny, an award-winning filmmaker, is under focus as her husband is appointed as special counsel. United States Attorney General Merrick Garland chose Jack Smith to complete the Justice Departments investigations into former President Donald Trump. Garland appointed the veteran prosecutor, Smith, in an effort to insulate the Justice Department from accusations of it not being impartial in its investigations now that Trump has announced his 2024 candidacy. However, Chevigny’s political activities have the attention of Trump and others.
The Washington Examiner reports that Chevigny donated $1,000 to then-candidate Joe Biden’s campaign in 2020. The producer listed her employer as “Big Mouth Productions, Inc.” as she handed the donation over on September 20, 2020. In addition, Chevigny supported Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s campaign with a $150 donation in 2008.
According to IMDB, Chevigny is known for being a producer of “Becoming”, the 2020 “intimate documentary” about former first lady Michelle Obama. Here is the full description of the film:
Becoming is an intimate look into the life of former First Lady Michelle Obama during a moment of profound change, not only for her personally but for the country she and her husband served over eight impactful years in the White House. The film offers a rare and up-close look at her life, taking viewers behind the scenes as she embarks on a 34-city tour that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories.
Republicans Respond
On Truth, President Trump shared comments from Rep. Troy Nehls who pointed out the film and donations. In conclusion, he ends his remarks by saying “Are you paying attention yet?”
Trump himself shared what appears to be past social media posts by the filmmaker. On November 7, 2020, Chevigny tweets that she is crying tears as Biden is announced as winner. “Thank goodness…” she tweets.
Furthermore, Eric Trump weighed in on the special counsel appointment by sharing a Truth post concluding with “American political corruption at its finest!”
In addition, former Trump campaign CEO and advisor, Steve Bannon, remarked on Gettr: “The Special Counsel is NOT impartial – House Republicans MUST cut off all money to this CHARADE.”
In 2010, then-Attorney General Eric Holder appointed Smith as a new leader of the Justice Department’s “public integrity section.”
Lanny Breuer led the Justice Department’s criminal division, which includes the public integrity section, at the time Smith was hired for the job. “He’s not political at all. He’s straight down the middle,” says Breuer.
