If you thought the magic of the movies was fading, think again. The box office didn’t just boom this past weekend—it practically exploded.
Driven by the monumental release of Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, moviegoers rushed to the big screen in unprecedented, history-making numbers. AMC Entertainment announced on Monday, August 3, 2026, that it just wrapped up the highest-grossing single weekend in its entire 106-year history. Grab your popcorn (and maybe a soft drink to wash it down—AMC certainly sold enough of them!), because here is a look inside the wild, record-smashing weekend at the movies.
Web-Slinging to the Top of the Box Office
The web-slinger’s latest saga was the undeniable star of the show. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day swung into theaters and put up mind-boggling numbers:
- Domestic Box Office: $355 million opening weekend
- Global Box Office: $927 million opening weekend
That gives the Spidey sequel the second-highest domestic and global opening weekend of all time for any film.
“It is a powerful and unmistakable reminder that audiences overwhelmingly embrace the theatrical experience when studios release films that audiences want to see,” said AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron.
From Thursday through Sunday, AMC broke individual admission revenue records for every single day of the weekend—Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday each set all-time single-day highs for the company.
More Than 10 Million Fans and a New Concession Record
It wasn’t just ticket sales driving the hype. Across the globe, more than 10.2 million moviegoers passed through AMC Theatres in the U.S. and ODEON Cinemas internationally from Wednesday through Sunday. It marks AMC’s highest-attended weekend of the decade and the third highest-attended weekend in company history. And all those fans definitely came hungry. AMC officially smashed its all-time domestic and global record for food and beverage revenue in a single weekend—topping the previous record held since 2019 by Avengers: Endgame.
Premium Formats Are Still King

Moviegoers weren’t just showing up; they were opting for the biggest and loudest screens available. AMC reported its highest-grossing Dolby Cinema weekend ever in the U.S. thanks to Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey proved it still has incredible staying power. Over two weeks into its run, the epic is still packing IMAX screens. In fact, demand remains so intense that New York City’s iconic AMC Lincoln Square 13 ran around-the-clock 24-hour IMAX 70mm showtimes Friday through Sunday for the third weekend in a row. Because of the massive turnout, AMC and Universal have announced they are extending IMAX 70mm showtimes into September at select locations.
A Summer to Remember
Combined with The Odyssey and other summer hits, Spider-Man: Brand New Day helped push the overall domestic box office to the highest-grossing admissions weekend in industry history. AMC noted that Brand New Day marks the ninth movie title since March 2026 to open to a massive opening weekend. So, if you’ve been waiting for the right moment to catch a movie on the big screen, the crowd has spoken: the theatrical experience is officially alive, thriving, and bigger than ever.
Spidey Coming to IMAX
The latest Spider-Man film is coming to IMAX August 7. The Odyssey had IMAX exclusivity during its first couple of opening weeks.
