Snapchat launched Spotlight today. Spotlight is a new section on the app where users can submit video Snaps for the opportunity to earn a share of $1 million that Snapchat is distributing to creators each day.
Spotlight submissions need to be vertical videos with sound that are up to 60 seconds in length. Creators can use tools such as captions, sounds, lenses and gifs. Snapchat may limit how many Snaps one can submit to Spotlight within a certain window of time- so it’s recommending the best of your best.
Payout will be determined by their proprietary formula which takes engagement metrics into account.
Unlike TikTok, Spotlight content is moderated and does not allow for public comments. The two social apps have been in a dogfight in reach recently. According to comScore, TikTok parent Bytedance reached 73.MM U.S. unique visitors in October 2020 compared with 72.9MM uniques for Snapchat.
TikTok just celebrated it’s first creator, Charli D’Amelio, with 100 million followers.
Meanwhile, Instagram introduced Reels in August. Reels are 15 second multi-clip videos with audio, effects an new creative tools.
