Frank Stephenson has designed vehicles for the likes of BMW, Mini, Ferrari, McLaren and Alfa Romeo. He has a retrospective film about his life called “Chasing Perfect”. Highly recommended viewing for auto enthusiasts.
Our favorite of his designs is the 21st century version of the Mini Cooper. It’s one of those designs with the proportions and appearance that will never go out of style.
Stephenson has been reacting to car designs and chatting about some of his own on YouTube this past year. His takes on the Tesla Cybertruck and Ford Bronco are among the raft of reviews.
His latest video is an analysis of the Cyberpunk 2077 vehicles. Cyberpunk 2077 was among the most anticipated video game releases of 2020. It is set in the futuristic Night City.
“An ’80s Interpretation of the Future”
Fiat 500 designer Stephenson says the cars are an “80’s interpretation of the future.” His hero car is the Quadra Turbo R VTEL. Stephenson remarks that it appears to take inspiration of the Ferrari Testarossa of the 1980s era. More specifically, like a Detroit attempt at a Testarossa style. “A muscle car on steroids,” according to the Stephenson.
Cyberpunk 2077 vehicles include the two wheel variety as well. Stephenson is a motorcycle enthusiast and loves the bikes in the game. The Porsche 911 also “grabs him” in all the right ways. It has been updated in the game but retains the classic 911 shape. He says it “makes him feel like he’s going to win.” The interior of the 911 in the game is “incredible.”
