Evening Media Notes: January 7, 2021

Four television stations in Columbus, Ohio launch NEXTGEN TV – WSYX (ABC/FOX), WCMH-TV (NBC), WWHO (CW), and WTTE (TBD Network) started using NEXTGEN TV today. The technology is powered by ATSC 3.0. Features like immersive audio, video up to 4K on mobile, personalized video tools and advanced emergency alerts.

The stations are encouraging viewers to rescan their TVs.

ATSC 3.0 is built on the same Internet Protocol backbone as today’s popular streaming platforms. Viewers will see improved video quality. 4K UHD video with HDR is possible with ATSC 3.0. Broadcasters will also have more measurement tools available to them.

Arlington, Virginia based BitPath led the planning process and coordination across the four television stations. BiPath developed the new data broadcasting services.

Scripps creates new national networks business via acquisition of ION Media – The Scripps acquisition of ION Media Networks Inc. has closed. The plan is to combine ION with the Katz networks and Newsy. This will allow for the formation of a “full-scale national television networks business.” The networks will reach nearly every American through free over the air broadcast, cable/satellite, OTT and digital distribution. Warner Bros. names Josh Goldstine President, Worldwide Marketing of their Pictures Group – Goldstine will report to Toby Emmerich, Chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group. In his new job, Goldstine will “lead the development and execution of all marketing campaigns for the Studio’s global theatrical releases from Warner Bros Pictures, New Line Cinema, DC-Based Films and Warner Animation Group, as well as for HBO Max original features.”
