Media Notes: March 23, 2021

Disney Update on Summer Film Release Schedule: As we reported earlier today, Black Widow will launch simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access in most Disney+ markets on Friday, July 9.

In addition, the highly anticipated live-action film Cruella will also launch simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access in most Disney+ markets on Friday, May 28.

Disney says Pixar’s Luca will stream directly in homes worldwide exclusively on Disney+ beginning Friday, June 18, as “a special offering to kick off the summer season.”

Theatrical release dates also shifted for several additional upcoming films. New release dates include:

  • Free Guy on August 13, 2021
  • Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on September 3, 2021
  • The King’s Man on December 22, 2021
  • Deep Water on January 14, 2022
  • Death on the Nile on February 11, 2022

Facebook will bring back F8 on June 2 as a pared-back, single-day, virtual-only conference for developers – After a few twists and turns and then ultimately cancelling its F8 developer conference last year over Covid-19 concerns, Facebook today announced a return of the event in a virtual-only format it is calling F8 Refresh. HBO drama series The Nevers debuts Part One of its first season with six episodes beginning on Sunday, April 11 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT). Part Two’s six episodes will follow at a later date, to be announced. The series will air on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max.

Microsoft reportedly in talks to buy Discord for more than $10 billion – Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported Monday that a deal is not imminent and Discord has also been talking to others about a sale. Nintendo partners with Pokemon Go maker Niantic on Pikmin app – Nintendo Co Ltd said on Tuesday it is partnering with Pokemon Go app developer Niantic to create augmented reality (AR) titles, with a Pikmin themed app launching this year.

The partnership could breathe life into Nintendo’s stalled mobile ambitions after the firm struggled to replicate the appeal of Pokemon Go, which became a social phenomenon as gamers spilled onto the streets to “catch” Pokemon using their phones. [Reuters]

Qualcomm is planning an Android-powered Nintendo Switch knockoff – Qualcomm plans its first foray into the consumer electronics market in years — with a device that bears a strong resemblance to Nintendo’s wildly popular Switch game console. According to a source familiar with the company’s strategy, the Android-powered game console will attempt to showcase the company’s Snapdragon chipsets in a less traditional form factor. In the Gutter Department – Gannett’s Asbury Park Press runs photo caption of ‘f–king hot nurse’ – Gannett’s Asbury Park Press, the third-largest daily newspaper in New Jersey, sparked outrage over the weekend when it published a photo caption of “a f–king hot nurse” administering a COVID vaccine.

The offensive caption also called the unidentified nurse “a total JAP” — short for Jewish American Princess, a slur — adding racism to the already profane and misogynistic text. [NY Post]
