We knew Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train and Mortal Kombat would fight it out this weekend. Box Office Pro reports that Demon Slayer wins the #1 slot domestically with $6.42 million in 1,905 locations. Mortal Kombat follows with an estimated $6.2 million. The numbers are actually encouraging given that only 57% of North American theaters are currently operating.
The R rated animated film already has several trophies on it’s mantle. It is the biggest grossing film in Japan, with $368 million ticket sales. With this weekend’s haul, Demon Slayer has made $32.2 million domestically. That’s good enough to become the third highest grossing anime movie of all time in North America, according to Box Office Pro.
The R rated horror film Separation was the lone new release with wide release this weekend. It’s results were in line with our projections– $1.8 million from 1,751 venues. Horror fests like The Unholy have been durable performers as theaters began to reopen this year. They tend to be review proof- Separation scores 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Wrath of Man will explode on the scene with a nationwide release next weekend. Guy Ritchie directs and Jason Statham stars.
