Glasgow electro-pop trio Chvrches teams up with The Cure’s Robert Smith on new track, How Not to Drown. Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry reflected on the creation of the new song.
“These lyrics are about a time when I just wanted to disappear, and the only time I ever thought about quitting the band. I felt like I was in over my head at the deep end and not sure how to get back.”

Mayberry says she did get back. “And if you’ve felt like that, I hope you find your way back too. This the chapter on what to do after they dig you up.”
Bandmate Martin Doherty remembered working on the demo that eventually blossomed into a collaboration between his band and “my all time music hero, Robert Smith.”
Doherty wrote the demo while seeking some equilibrium to get through the day. He admits he was “depressed, anxious, isolated” at the time. Furthermore, Doherty says music has always been his escape: “if you feel like giving up, don’t.”
Watch the band discuss how Robert Smith connected with them:
According to Rolling Stone, the music video was filmed remotely during lockdown. Smith filmed himself at home in front of a greenscreen.
Scott Kiernan directed and edited the clip. Kyle Porter produced and Sebastian Mlynarski was Director of Photography.
The song will be on the band’s upcoming album Screen Violence, set to release August 27. Pre-orders are open now on their website.
Chvrches will also hit the road this Fall on a North American Tour. Shows kick off November 9 in Houston and wrap up in Los Angeles on December 17.
Metal Gear director Hideo Kojima lauded the new track and upcoming album. The band created a song for his latest game, Death Standing.
