AMC Theatres Had 3.2 Million Moviegoers This Past Weekend

AMC Theatres had approximately 3.2 million moviegoers in their cinemas globally this past weekend. The Thursday though Sunday frame set another record for the chain. Globally, this was the busiest weekend since AMC theatres closed in March of 2020 due to the pandemic.

Furthermore, AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron notes that the chain also showed UFC’s Poirier McGregor 3 fight Saturday night.

Other AMC highlights include:

  • AMC’s U.S. theatres had more than 2.5 million moviegoers at is theatres, Thursday through Sunday.
  • Eight of the top 10 busiest theatres in the U.S. across the whole movie theatre industry were AMCs. They were led by the AMC Burbank 30 complex in Burbank, Calif.

The industry box office was led by Marvel’s Black Widow, which opened to an estimated $80 million for its domestic opening weekend. That broke the previous record, which was set by F9 just two weekends ago.

AMC reports that the other nine movies in the top 10 also posted meaningful ticket sales and helped give the industry its first $100-million plus domestic box office weekend since early 2020.

To be clear, AMC’s results are important given that it is the largest movie exhibition company in the United States, Europe and globally.

What’s Next?

Warner Bros. has Space Jam: A New Legacy on tap for this upcoming weekend. The PG rated family film follows the revered 1996 live action/animated hybrid comedy. The sequel is mirroring the original in several ways, including McDonald’s Happy Meal collectible toys.

Furthermore, another sequel joins Lebron James’ basketball film. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions is a PG-13 psychological thriller. Horror films have proved to be durable in the pandemic era.  In this installment, six people unwittingly find themselves locked in another series of escape rooms, slowly uncovering what they have in common to survive…and discovering they’ve all played the game before.
