How the Copycats Came for Clubhouse – Downloads of the buzzy chat app dipped in the spring as pandemic lockdowns were lifted and new competition emerged, according to the data and analytics firm Sensor Tower. Major tech companies started similar audio platforms: Twitter rolled out Spaces, Facebook made an audio chat feature and Spotify introduced one called Greenroom. And some communities, like those focused on gaming and nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, gravitated to more established chat platforms like Discord, which offers audio features. [NY Times]

Camila Cabello Sells Los Angeles Home With Recording Studio for $4.3 Million – Pop star Camila Cabello has sold a Los Angeles home with a recording studio for $4.3 million, $350,000 over the original listing price.

The four-bedroom home was listed for just nine days and received four written offers before it went into escrow, according to the listing agent, Denise Rosner of Compass, who sold the home to Ms. Cabello back in 2019 for $3.375 million. [WSJ]

News Corp to Acquire Base Chemicals – News Corp announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire the Base Chemicals business from S&P Global and IHS Markit.

Base Chemicals will become part of Dow Jones’ Professional Information Business, alongside OPIS, the energy and renewables data and information business. The OPIS acquisition (along with related assets), also from S&P Global and IHS Markit, was announced in August. The addition of Base Chemicals and OPIS will further enhance Dow Jones’ information services business.

Base Chemicals is known for its pricing data, insights, analysis and forecasting capabilities for the world’s most important base chemicals delivered through its leading Market Advisory and World Analysis services. Base Chemicals has a strong track record of growth, with a revenue base that is nearly 100% digital and recurring, and, similar to OPIS, has high margins with modest Capex requirements.

Toss a coin to your Witcher! Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer are back and dominated the global top 10 charts last week. The Witcher Season 2 debuted at #1 with audiences spending 142.43M hours immersed in the magical world created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and starring Henry Cavill. The Witcher Season 1 closely followed at #2 on the English TV list and both seasons made top 10 lists in more than 90 countries.  

For the second week in a row, Sandra Bullock starrer The Unforgivabledirected by Nora Fingscheidt, remains the  #1 English film and a top 10 film in 94 countries with 74.44M hours viewed, while Paolo Sorrentino’s acclaimed film The Hand of God debuted as the #2 non-English film.

ESPN boasts eight presentations of each College Football Playoff Semifinal courtesy of the network’s signature CFP MegaCast production on Friday, Dec. 31. – In total, nearly 40 presentations will be available across the New Year’s Six, peaking with the CFP Semifinals as the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic highlights No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Cincinnati (3:30 p.m. ET) and the Capital One Orange Bowl features No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 Georgia (7:30 p.m.).

Across all New Year’s Six games, ESPN will provide fans with three dozen different presentations across the six preeminent bowls. AMC Theatres announced it has reached lease agreements and plan to reopen theatres in the Los Angeles and Chicago markets – AMC is expected to begin operations at AMC Northridge Fashion Center 10, formally a Pacific theatre, in Northridge, Calif., in the spring of 2022. AMC expects to begin operations at AMC Chicago 14, formally an Arclight location in NEWCITY located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, under a new name in spring of 2022.

AMC remains in active discussions with other property owners regarding additional currently closed locations.

Upon reopening, guests at both locations can expect many of AMC’s most popular amenities, including enhanced food and beverage offerings, and AMC Stubs, a world class loyalty and subscription service that includes AMC Stubs A-List. [AMC]
