Stephen A. Smith Addresses White House Visit, Urges Corporate Support for HBCUs

Sports media personality, New York Times bestselling author, and Winston-Salem State University graduate Stephen A. Smith has stepped forward to address public debate surrounding his recent attendance at a White House dinner with President Donald Trump. Smith framed his presence at the high-profile gathering as a targeted effort to secure critical financial backing and long-term sustainability for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Advocating for HBCUs at the Highest Levels

Addressing criticism over his engagement with the administration, Smith made it clear that his core motivation remains rooted in preserving educational opportunities for future generations of Black leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals.

“I will always advocate for HBCUs and the students whose futures depend on them,” Smith said. “My reason for attending the White House dinner was to discuss the challenges these institutions face in securing long-term funding and to make the case that corporate America must continue to invest in them.”

Navigating Corporate Caution and Political Tensions

While acknowledging key legislative measures like the FUTURE Act that have provided essential federal backing to minority-serving institutions, Smith warned of growing risks in the private sector. He expressed concern that ongoing political polarization surrounding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives could intimidate corporate donors and disrupt private capital flows to Black colleges.

“If we truly believe in free-market capitalism, businesses should be able to support educational institutions and charitable causes without fear of criticism or repercussions,” Smith emphasized. “HBCUs have made extraordinary contributions to this country. They deserve sustained public and private investment.”

A Track Record of Impact

Key leaders within the HBCU advocacy space have rallied behind Smith’s strategic engagement approach. Ashley Christopher, Esq., Founder and CEO of the HBCU Week Foundation, recognized Smith’s willingness to use his national influence to elevate the issue on major platforms.

“Stephen A. Smith has been a powerful advocate for HBCUs, using his platform and influence to shine a national spotlight on our institutions,” Christopher said. “His continued support of HBCU Week helps advance our mission of connecting students with life-changing educational opportunities, and we are proud to have him as our ambassador.”
