The next Star Trek motion picture will be released June 9, 2023. The news was tucked into a Paramount press release today. Paramount has shuffled release dates for a number of films. For example, Top Gun: Maverick moves to Novermber 19, 2021 from July 2, 2021. Another Tom Cruise film, Mission: Impossible 7 moves to May 27, 2022. M:I7 was originally set for November 19, 2021. So, one Tom Cruise movie replaces another.
But, for sci-fi fans, the confirmation of a new Star Trek film was the most exciting news today. This could potentially be the movie Kalinda Vazquez is writing. The Discovery writer wrote the best episode of the last season, Terra Firma, Part 2. That episode was tour de force for Michelle Yeoh and tied into Star Trek: The Original Series. No surprise, given that Vazquez got her name from the original Star Trek series, after a character from the second-season episode “By Any Other Name.”
Quentin Tarantino had been discussing being involved with a new Trek film. He was working with The Reverant’s writer Mark L. Smith on an interesting idea. Fargo’s Noah Hawley also had a take on the next film, but those plans are halted at last check.
The Vazquez written Star Trek film will be produced by JJ Abram’s Bad Robot company. That firm produced the first three rebooted Star Trek films, starting with 2009’s Star Trek.
