News Corp publications, such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch and New York Post, will join Google’s News Showcase. In a deal News Corp is hailing as historic, the company has agreed to a multi-year partnership with Google. Google will make “significant payments” to the media company in return for providing “trusted journalism from its news sites around the world”.
News Corp publications, such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch and New York Post, will join Google’s News Showcase. Google says the Showcase panels give publishers the ability to tell important news stories together with context and links to additional stories. Panels also feature recognizable branding so users can easily find and identify trusted news organizations.
Google promised that 2021 would be a year of major investment in News Showcase. All part of a $1 billion investment over the next three years by the tech company.
But the deal includes more than just News Showcase. Development of a subscription platform, the sharing of ad revenue via Google’s ad tech services, the cultivation of audio journalism and meaningful investments in video journalism by YouTube are part of the three year pact as well.
Robert Thomson, Chief Executive of News Corp, said that the deal would have “a positive impact on journalism around the globe as we have firmly established that there should be a premium for premium journalism.”
“I would like to thank Sundar Pichai and his team at Google who have shown a thoughtful commitment to journalism that will resonate in every country. This has been a passionate cause for our company for well over a decade and I am gratified that the terms of trade are changing, not just for News Corp, but for every publisher.”
