‘A Quiet Place Part II’ Has Big Memorial Day Weekend

A Quiet Place Part II took the checkered flag with a big Memorial Day weekend. The Paramount film brought in $57 million across 3,726 locations, according to Comscore. That performance allowed the John Krasinksi directed production to explode past Godzilla vs. Kong for the biggest opening frame of the pandemic era this year. The monster movie brought in $32.2 million on the 3 day Easter weekend.

The horror thriller sequel also performed well with audiences. A Quiet Place Part II scored an “A-” via Cinemascore polling of moviegoers.

This is all lovely news for ViacomCBS. Their Paramount Pictures division has the trophy for biggest blockbuster of the year. In addition, Paramount has Snake Eyes on deck for release July 23, 2021. The studio’s Top Gun will take off November 19, 2021.

The other big opener this Memorial Day weekend, Cruella, scored an “A” Cinemascore. Furthermore, the Disney film was #2 at the box office. Cruella brought in $26.5 million across 3,892 domestic locations.

Lionsgate’s Spiral was #3, adding $2.76 million to a total of over $20 million now since release. Wrath of Man rounded out the top 4 with $2.8 million. The Jason Statham actioner now stands at $22.8 million total domestic box office.

What’s Next

Next weekend, another horror thriller, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, bows in theaters. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga headline the cast. In addition, the animated Spirit Untamed will be the family entry for the June 4 weekend.

Marvel Studios releases Black Widow July 9

All eyes continue to be on the newest Fast & Furious entry, F9, releasing June 25. That action fest is seen as the best barometer of the health of global cinema. We think July 9’s Black Widow will be just as important, though that will have a streaming option via Disney+ Premier Access. In fact, the Scarlett Johansson spy thriller is the #1 movie Fandango ticket buyers are most excited about.
