Michael Bay returns to the director’s seat with Ambulance, a new film opening April 8, 2022. Most importantly, the heist story is the Transformers director’s latest since 2019’s 6 Underground. Ambulance is based on the original story and screenplay for the 2005 Danish film Ambulancen. Bay’s film stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González.
Bay said it was fun to do the film in 38 days with limited budget. The director said it was fun. “It’s good to have little money, less toys, great actors and it was more immediate film making.” E.T. director Steven Spielberg told Bay that putting restrictions on yourself makes you use your brain in a different way.
The Story
Universal shared this synopsis of the film:
Decorated veteran Will Sharp (Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Candyman, The Matrix Resurrections), desperate for money to cover his wife’s medical bills, asks for help from the one person he knows he shouldn’t—his adoptive brother Danny (Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, Zodiac, Spider-Man: Far From Home). A charismatic career criminal, Danny instead offers him a score: the biggest bank heist in Los Angeles history: $32 million. With his wife’s survival on the line, Will can’t say no.
But when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the desperate brothers hijack an ambulance with a wounded cop clinging to life and ace EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza González, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Baby Driver) onboard. In a high-speed pursuit that never stops, Will and Danny must evade a massive, city-wide law enforcement response, keep their hostages alive, and somehow try not to kill each other, all while executing the most insane escape L.A. has ever seen.
Bay Utilized Drones in Filming
González says that Bay “was getting different shots that you usually never shoot. Therefore, it gave it a very different style.” Executive Producer Michael Kase has done nine movies with the director. One of his first jobs on every movie is “what’s the newest, coolest gear out there.” For this movie it was FPV.
A pilot flew the FPV (first person view) drone using a VR headset. Consequently, they’re able to see what the drone sees in real time. Furthermore, the footage is something no normal camera can capture. To be clear, Abdul-Mateen II says hopefully theatergoers “hopefully leave the theater sweating.” Also, González agreed it needs to be seen in a cinema: “You have to watch on the big screen-the way it was shot.” Gyllenhaal said he “can’t wait for it to be in theater.”
While it is designed for cinema and even IMAX, Universal will make it available to stream on Peacock after 45 days in theaters.
