Former CEO of his Uncarrier T-Mobile, John Legere, is considering running for office for the first time. The assault of the U.S. Capitol this month pushed him to speak up. Fixing what is broken is in his DNA and it appears he is ready for the challenge.
He didn’t specify which office he may seek. Let’s think big for now and consider the presidency.
During a 2015 spat with candidate Donald Trump, Legere described himself as “an undecided Republican.” Let’s put aside thought of an Independent run- the slow cooker Sunday CEO could make a run in a wide open Republican field. Think popular, business minded former CEO without the baggage.
We’ll list some of his strong attributes here, but overall it’s his ability to set a vision, get buy in and execute on it.
He’s Available
After stepping down from T-Mobile upon completion of the merger with Sprint in April 2019, there were was speculation where Legere may end up. One rumor saw Legere taking a shot at turning around WeWork. The rumor was false, but made sense given the brash executive’s ability to transform large companies.
He departed the telecom company’s board of directors earlier than expected in April 2020, tantalizing us by saying it was “to pursue other options.”
Impressive Resume in Business
The man single handedly reshaped the telecom landscape in U.S. before he stepped down in April 2019. Bloomberg Intelligence’s John Butler said T-Mobile was “virtually a dead brand with very little brand awareness.” His Uncarrier plans made moves like getting rid of contracts which other carriers had to quickly implement. I look at my Verizon contract and see a lot of the Uncarrier influence today.
Man of the People
Legere had a stint as an undercover Las Vegas Lyft driver in 2017. Of course he tried convince his passengers to switch carriers.
Able to Share Success and Praise
While Legere was the face of T-Mobile, but he was always quick to praise the strong team he built. Even after leaving T-Mobile, he is giving kudos to his successor, Mike Sievert.
Transparent
We were always impressed in seeing the behind the scenes livestream of T-Mobile’s quarterly earnings calls.
Empowering the Next Generation
Improving communities has long been on Legere’s radar. In 2018, he kicked off the first T-Mobile Changemaker Challenge. Young Americans age 13-23 were able to submit plans how to improve their communities.
Salesmanship
Legere put a on tour de force at his Uncarrier events. Those events were the talk of the tech media world as Legere rolled out his latest innvotion.
The former T-Mobile CEO also was effective in selling the T-Mobile-Sprint merger to the Congress and government regulators.
Showmanship
Well, let this video speak for itself.
